Principal Oboe of the New York Philharmonic, Liang Wang opens up about chasing dreams and more.

In an exclusive interview with WAOK's very own Alyssa DiTomasso, Liang Wang, Principal Oboe for the New York Philharmonic opens up about chasing his dreams, the importance of live music and more.

Wang shares with DiTomasso his first experience with the oboe was when he was a young boy seeing his uncle perform Swan Lake in a local Orchestra. He shares that the exotic sound of the oboe is was another appealing factor for wanting to play this particular instrument. Wang goes on to share that in Asian American Culture it is quite normal for young kids to be encouraged to play instruments like the piano or other stringed instruments, so he was happy to pick something more rare.

Wang talks about overcoming his fear of failure and knowing he had to chase his dreams until they no longer work. He says part of overcoming his fear is he's never felt that his career is work, just him enjoying playing the oboe for fun. Wang talks about the importance of exploring music education and that his latest project helps to encourage this. Wang also talks about the effects COVID-19 had on the music community and more.
