LAWRENCEVILLE, GA: In an era dominated by viral trends, and perfectly curated TikTok sounds, the soul of live music is quietly shifting back to its roots. Ahead of The Head and The Heart's upcoming performance at Gas South Arena on September 3rd, drummer Tyler Williams sat down with me to talk about where music is heading, the power of authenticity, and why getting back to basics could be the key to saving the genre.

You have to go underground to comeback

The landscape of indie, rock and alternative music has felt dismal as of late. But Tyler shares there's hope because more and more fans are turning back to supporting local musicians. Fans are finding their way to these underground spaces that are keeping the art of live music safe.

Fans are growing tired of the corporate music machine and are digging into the underground scene for real, authentic music. They are craving that connection to the artist and songs that they aren't seeing in mainstream music. Smaller venues, word of mouth discoveries and grassroot fan bases are forming the backbone of music's next era. Modern listeners are desperate for raw energy and real instruments. And that's how The Head and The Heart have been able to win fans over for the last 15 years.

Authenticity beats out Algorithms every time

The Seattle based group proved time and time again that remaining true to themselves has been the best litmus test of adapting to the times. Because they've prioritized artist integrity above all else fans feel more connected to their work. Tyler shared that they lean in on the fact that they're private people, they're not online doing a silly dance trend or using viral sound to push their identity because it's not who they are as individuals or as a group.

Because they've focused on real connection they've build lasting relationships with fans all over the world. And in doing so they've been able to maintain a timeless identity while many groups pivot and rebrand to appease corporate big wigs. Even now in the fast paced digital world we live in The Head and The Heart returned to a more "independent" label setting allowing them more autonomy in creating the sound they love and remind them of their original roots.
